Where to start

Not Sure What You Inherited? Start Here

Sometimes the starting point is a single ring. Sometimes it's a box of jewelry handed down by a relative. We'll look through the pieces with you and discuss possible next steps for care, repair, restoration, wearing or redesign. The initial conversation and evaluation is complimentary. A formal written appraisal is a separate service; please confirm the details with our team when booking.

If the collection also includes coins, bullion or watches, see our guide to inherited jewelry, coins and valuables.

Family history

When Family Stories and Jewelry Details Differ

An inherited piece may have been described as a certain gemstone, metal or maker for decades. Sometimes an examination suggests the story should be revisited, or that a piece deserves additional review. This does not change the personal meaning of the jewelry. It helps you make more informed decisions. A preliminary discussion is not the same as formal identification, authentication or written valuation.

Everyday wear

Before Wearing an Older Ring Every Day

A ring that has spent years in a jewelry box may have thin prongs, a worn shank, loose stones or older repairs. These issues can be difficult to notice without an evaluation. If your goal is to wear an heirloom regularly, we recommend examining it first and discussing what may need attention. Our page on diamond and prong repair explains warning signs for settings.

Your options

Repair, Restore or Redesign?

01

Repair

Address specific wear or damage while retaining the piece's existing design where appropriate.

02

Restore

Consider broader work on an older piece when wear affects multiple parts of its structure.

03

Redesign

Preserve meaningful diamonds or gemstones while exploring a new design that better suits how you want to wear it. See our custom jewelry redesign service in Austin.

The right option depends on condition, history, desired use and which details matter most to you. We won't assume every old piece must look new.

Can Original Stones or Metal Be Reused?

Existing stones can sometimes be considered for a restored or redesigned piece after their condition and suitability are reviewed. Reusing old gold or platinum is not always the best approach for the integrity of a new design. In some cases, fresh metal may be recommended, with appropriate value or credit options for original materials discussed separately.

Preserving Character Is Part of the Conversation

Wear can be part of an heirloom's appeal. The aim is not always a perfect polish or a completely remade ring. We'll discuss which details you want to preserve and which may require attention for the piece to be enjoyed. For broader work, start with fine jewelry repair in Austin, and for fit changes see ring resizing.

Questions

Heirloom Jewelry FAQs

Bring the piece, your questions and any family history you know. We'll start there.

Can I wear my grandmother's ring every day?

Possibly, but we recommend examining its construction and current condition first.

Do you restore antique jewelry?

We evaluate older fine jewelry and discuss repair or restoration options based on each piece.

Will restoration remove all signs of age?

Not necessarily. Tell us what details you want to preserve so that those priorities can inform the recommendation.

Can you reuse an heirloom diamond?

Often, existing diamonds and gemstones can be considered for restoration or redesign, depending on their condition.

Can you reuse the original gold or platinum?

Sometimes, but it may not be the best choice for a structurally sound new piece. We'll explain appropriate alternatives.

What if I don't know whether the stones are real?

You can still schedule a conversation. Any formal identification or valuation needs to be distinguished from the initial evaluation.

Do you evaluate an entire box of inherited jewelry?

You can bring a group of pieces for an initial discussion. Let the team know what you're bringing when you schedule.

Is the initial heirloom evaluation free?

Yes. The initial conversation and evaluation is complimentary. Formal written appraisals are a separate service. Please confirm current terms when booking.

Do I have to redesign an old ring?

No. Keeping, repairing, restoring or redesigning are separate possibilities to consider.

Can an old ring be resized?

Potentially, but the setting, prior repairs and metal wear must be evaluated first.
