Understanding the 4 C’s — Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat — is essential to choosing the right diamond. These are the four key criteria used by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and other major labs to evaluate and grade diamonds. But not all C’s are created equal, and depending on your priorities, some may matter more to you than others.

Cut: The Most Important C
Cut refers to how well a diamond’s facets are proportioned and polished to reflect light. It’s the single most important factor in determining brilliance and sparkle. Even a perfectly colorless, flawless diamond can appear dull if it’s poorly cut.
GIA only assigns Cut grades to round brilliant diamonds, using a scale from Excellent to Poor. A diamond cannot earn an Excellent Cut grade unless Polish and Symmetry are also Very Good or better.
Color: The Less You See, the More It’s Worth
Color is graded from D (completely colorless) to Z (light yellow or brown). Most people choose diamonds in the D–J range. Diamonds are graded for color by viewing them from the side under neutral lighting and comparing to master stones.
The visible difference between D and G is small — but the price difference is not. The best value is often found in the near-colorless G–H range.
Clarity: What You Don’t See Can Save You Money
Clarity measures internal inclusions and surface blemishes. Most diamonds have natural imperfections, but many are invisible to the naked eye. GIA grades clarity from Flawless (FL) to Included (I1–I3). Most clients choose diamonds in the VS or SI range, where the stone is clean to the eye but more affordable than higher grades.
Carat: Weight, Not Size
Carat refers to weight, not face-up size. A 1.00ct diamond weighs 200 milligrams (1/5 of a gram), but how large it looks depends on the Cut. Two diamonds can weigh the same but appear different in size depending on proportions. Pricing jumps significantly at common thresholds like 1.00ct and 2.00ct.
