How to Know If a Diamond Is Truly Natural —Without Getting Fooled

1. Why It Matters More Than Ever

As lab-grown diamonds flood the market and retail transparency continues to erode, discerning buyers are left wondering: How can I be sure my diamond is truly natural? For many, it’s not just about sparkle — it’s about long-term value, rarity, and knowing that you’re getting exactly what you paid for.

2. Trust the Report — But Make Sure It’s GIA

There are many diamond grading labs, but only one name carries universal authority: the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). If you’re buying a natural diamond, it must come with a GIA Natural Diamond Grading Report. GIA does not co-mingle lab-grown grading with natural — and that separation matters. Other labs may offer reports, but none are as strict or as credible as GIA.

3. Clues from Within: Inclusions, Growth Patterns & Fluorescence

Natural diamonds often exhibit unique internal characteristics — called inclusions — that can indicate natural formation. These may include feathers, clouds, or pinpoints that formed over millions of years. Lab-grown diamonds sometimes show growth patterns like striations or metallic flux inclusions from their manufacturing process. Fluorescence (a glow under UV light) can also offer clues, although it’s not definitive on its own.

4. The Rise of HPHT & CVD: More Confusion Than Clarity

Today’s lab diamonds come in two flavors: HPHT (High Pressure High Temperature) and CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition). Some retailers fail to clearly disclose which is which — or that it’s lab-grown at all. Even worse, some stones are HPHT-treated natural diamonds, a process that enhances clarity but must be disclosed. Without a proper GIA report, you simply won’t know.

5. Advanced Tools: Yehuda, Sherlock Holmes & Dr. Watson

At The Diamond Room, we use industry-leading verification tools like the Yehuda Tester, Sherlock Holmes, and Dr. Watson machines to identify lab-created stones. These devices analyze how diamonds react to various types of light and energy, revealing signatures that even a trained eye can miss. We don’t guess — we test every diamond we acquire or consider offering to our clients.

6. Buyer Beware: Cruise Ports, Chain Stores & Online Marketplaces

We’ve seen countless clients come back from cruises or national retailers with diamonds they thought were natural — only to find out they weren’t. Without proper education and testing, even well-meaning shoppers can be misled. If a deal feels too good to be true, it probably is. Especially when buying online, always request a GIA report and third-party verification.

7. Why It Pays to Work with Experts Who Care

Natural diamonds are rare, beautiful, and timeless. But in a world where lab-grown pricing and deception are running rampant, it’s never been more important to work with a private jeweler who protects your interests. At The Diamond Room, every natural diamond we present has been vetted, tested, and certified for your peace of mind. No gimmicks. No surprises. Just real, natural beauty.

Matt O'Desky

I grew up in Chicago where we always had a “Diamond District” – an area of town with a slew of buildings filled with dozens of private jewelry wholesalers and upstairs diamond dealers.

When I moved to Texas, and realized there were few if any private jewelers, and I knew what I should do: Deliver a far more personalized experience, in a far more relaxed and enjoyable environment than any department store jeweler could possibly offer.

And show my clients obviously better diamonds at clearly better prices.
