GIA Lab Grown Diamond Changes

What You Need to Know

What Changed — and Why It Matters

Until now, GIA used the same 4Cs grading framework for both natural and lab-grown diamonds—though cautiously and with modified language. But that’s ending. Starting October 1, 2025, the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) will stop using the traditional 4Cs grading system for lab-grown diamonds. Instead, GIA will issue reports using a simplified two-tier system,

This marks a major shift in how lab-grown diamonds are evaluated—and it has significant implications for consumers, jewelers, and the entire diamond market.

Important: Lab diamonds that do not meet Standard criteria will no longer receive a GIA certificate. Reports will cost $15 per carat (minimum $15), and non-qualifying stones will incur a $5 evaluation fee.

Why It Matters to You

You Can Still Buy a Beautiful Lab Diamond

This change doesn’t make lab-grown diamonds less desirable—it just updates how they’re labeled. Stunning stones still exist in both tiers, and the right jeweler can guide you through the new standards.

Premium = The Top 1%

Only diamonds that meet strict D/VVS/Excellent criteria will earn the Premium designation. Most lab-grown diamonds will fall into the Standard category.

No More 4Cs for Lab Diamonds

If you’re used to seeing “G VS1 Excellent Cut” on a lab diamond, that style of grading is now reserved for natural stones. GIA has drawn a line—and you should know where your diamond stands.
The Diamond Room offers both lab-grown and natural diamonds. We’ve already adjusted our inventory and training to align with GIA’s new standards—so you can buy with confidence, no matter what type of diamond you prefer

GIA Lab-Grown Diamonds FAQs

What happens to lab diamonds graded before October 1?

GIA reports issued before the change remain valid. However, all new reports after Oct 1, 2025, will follow the Premium/Standard model.

Will IGI or other labs still use 4Cs?
Yes—for now. But GIA’s move may influence other grading labs to follow.
Does this make natural diamonds more valuable?

GIA’s shift reinforces that natural and lab-grown diamonds are different. For clients seeking long-term value or legacy pieces, natural diamonds remain the benchmark.
